UNI Global Union expressed its solidarity with the Korean Confederations of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the Korea Health and Medical Workers’ Union (KHMU) in their opposition to the military coup in Thailand.

Two days after the announcement that martial law had been put in force was made on May 20th, a military junta, named the National Order Maintenance Council (NOMC), led a coup and subsequently installed itself as the government of Thailand. UNI is gravely concerned by the deterioration of democracy and human rights violations in Thailand, with 28 people killed and over 800 injured in the last 6 months.

Along with 18 NGOs, KCTU and KHMU organised a protest and press conference in downtown Seoul to express solidarity with working people and all pro-democracy civilians in Thailand.

The protest demanded that the military coup be brought to an end, that democracy and respect of human rights be restored, as well as the release of political prisoners. They also demanded that Lèse Majesté law was abolished and that freedom of press was protected.

The demands will be submitted to the Thai Embassy after another protest in Seoul and citizens, trade unions and NGOs will continue to send protest emails to the Thai military government.

A solidarity conference will be held in Korea in order to generate more support and exposure on the situation in Thailand.
