UNI Europa Post & Logistics expresses solidarity with Moroccan postal strikers

Since the last week of October 2013, postal workers in Morocco have demonstrated, staged sit-ins, gone on hunger strike and participated in a one-day nation-wide general strike to support their Trade Union FNPL-UMT in their negotiations with the Poste Maroc management. The strike on 1 November had a near 100% participation rate of postal workers. Their reasons are that management took unserious bargaining positions and ignores the legally binding accord signed between themselves and the FNPL-UMT. These workers have been holding a sit-in outside of Groupe Postal Maroc headquarters in Rabat in protest and continue their hunger strike if management does not listen to their just concerns under the agreed accord.
On Monday 4 November 2013, thanks to the great work of the Trade Union and the support of the workers and the solidarity all over the world, FNPL-UMT was invited by the management to return to the bargaining table for negotiations. This can be seen as a first victory and a step forward by the management to take the claims of the union seriously.
- UNI Europa Post & Logistics fully supports FNPL-UMT’s call for strike and an action necessary in their struggle and we stand should to shoulder with all the workers who are courageously demanding the respect they deserve at work.
- UNI Europa Post & Logistics asks that the Moroccan government takes steps to ensure that Groupe Postal Maroc management acts responsibly and respectfully towards its employees.
- UNI Europa Post & Logistics defends Trade Union rights and will support with all means Trade Unions in their fight for the right to bargain and represent workers.
- UNI Europa Post & Logistics is opposing any attempt to privatize postal companies or parts of the services and consider it as a step towards worse working conditions, less quality services, social dumping and cut of the right for communication for the citizens.
On behalf of all UNI Europa Post & Logistics affiliates we ask President Benkirane to intercede in the case of the workers who have been forced to consider going on hunger strike because of the intransigence of the management of Groupe Postal Maroc. Postal workers deserve respect, good working conditions and good salaries for their daily work on the street and it is up to postal managements to honor their work by negotiating with postal Trade Unions and agreeing on strong agreements to support their workers.
