Regardless to protest by hundreds of opposition activists, the Ghanaian parliament has finally ratified the agreement between government and Vodafone UK for the sale of a 70% stake in state-controlled fixed-line and mobile operator Ghana Telecom. The deal was approved by 174 votes to 74. The 900 million USD sale attracted a heated debate from both sides on the floor of Parliament.



According to some newspapers, workers of Ghana Telecom broke into spontaneous jubilation when the Speaker of Parliament ruled that the deal between GT and Vodafone had been approved.



Ghana Telecom is the west African country's third-largest mobile phone group with 1.4 million customers or 17 percent of the market. In past few years, Vodafone has made an aggressive expantion into emerging markets across Asia and Africa.
