Workers cleaning retail shopping centres in Colorado and California took strike action last week, in support of their fight to join the SEIU. These strikes were among 20 demonstrations in shopping centres owned by General Growth Properties across the United States.



The union said that workers had been put under surveillance, intimidated, had shifts cut and been dismissed from employment for pro-union activity. To protest these abuses, 25 workers and their supporters attended a peaceful delegation to the management of Southland retail centre in California on 1 November 2007 where they were beaten, pepper-sprayed and racially insulted.



Cleaners returned to work after one day off the job and are continuing their campaign for decent jobs with affordable healthcare and a voice in the workplace.
