Washington Mutual (WaMu), US biggest savings and loan institution, had been under pressure for months and is the latest casualty of the subprime crisis.



This acquisition will create the largest US depository institution, with over $900bn of customer deposits and 2,300 branches all over the country.



WaMu specialised in providing home mortgages, credit cards and other retail lending products.
