In a report drawn up by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen (PES, DK), the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee asks for a series of legislative measures on issues related to hedge funds and private equity. A related report from the Legal Affairs Committee, drafted by Klaus-Heine Lehne (EPP-ED, DE) focuses in particular on transparency issues affecting these sectors. On 23 September 2008 the EP plenary backed both reports. As there was a sufficient level of support among MEPs for the measures, the Parliament can formally ask the European Commission to draw up new laws on financial regulation across the Union.
