It’s the first time in many years that the AMWU will be able to voice the concerns of the workers in the industry in a Federal Government forum.



The group set up by Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry and Science, Kim Carr includes union and employer representatives.



The Group was initiated by the Minister earlier this year following discussions with the union and other players in the printing industry.”



National Print Secretary Steve Walsh said he was supportive of the group and welcomed federal government intervention in the industry.



“The industry was neglected during the Howard years and we were never given the opportunity to have any input.



Mr Walsh said a range of issues were identified and prioritised at the meeting including the emission trading scheme and its impact on the industry, succession planning, the skills shortage and the future of the industry in Australia.



“There was a lot of emphasis on the sustainability of a printing industry in this country and what can be done to ensure its viability.”



Innovation in the industry and the transition from ink on paper into new areas and media convergence was also discussed.



A series of papers will be prepared for the group on all these issues with the aim of providing feedback to the government on solutions for the industry.
