The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is a day to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemics caused by the spreading of the HIV infection. The 1st of December was declared World AIDS Day because the first case of AIDS was diagnosed that day in 1981. Since then, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people all over the world, becoming one of the most destructive epidemics in history.

The red ribbon is the symbol that unites people who are HIV positive, those who live with them and those who support the fight against AIDS.

This is the theme chosen this year by the organizers of World AIDS Day (World AIDS Campaign). Although many people may think that “this” cannot happen to them (just to others) and they may not know anybody who suffers from this illness, it is still everybody’s responsibility to continue fighting against AIDS.
