The caravan of “global player“ is moving to India and will lead to 190 job cuts at EDS centers in Hungary. HP, who bought EDS a year ago, decided to move its activities to its own offshore center in Bangalore causing already 60 layoffs out of the 1500 workers the firm employs in Hungary.

UNI Global Union firmly condemns the way this outsourcing process took place. The local work council and the union reported that very poor information was given during negotiations with management. As a result, no agreement was reached. In addition, Hungarian centers were not mentioned as a place where dismissals could happen during the information process held by HP after the takeover. As a result, the European Works Council was not informed and couldn’t contact the colleagues in Hungary timely.



On top of that, some employees had to leave their office with their personal belongings immediately after being notified they were fired which was a big shock for them. Although no legal requirement was breached and employees were given a monthly salary, this is not unacceptable and contradicts all good practices in terms of information and consultation of the workforce when the delocalization of activities arises.It has also to be said that the union and the work council face difficulties in informing the workforce since many info are labeled as “confidential” by management. This is even more disappointing from a company that pretends to put employees first.
