UNI affiliates in South African came together on Wednesday 11 March 2009 in Johannesburg to launch the UNI Global Union South Africa Liaison Council. The event was attended by four (4) UNI affiliates in South Africa, as well as the UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings, UNI-Africa Acting Regional Secretary Zakari Koudougou and UNI-Africa Director of Organising & Campaigns Keith Jacobs. Philip Jennings hailed the occasion as a historic step for UNI Global Union, which would help the development of UNI-Africa. Zakari Koudougou welcomed the initiative, which would help to build joint co-operation as we head to the UNI-Africa Conference in Tunisia in May.



All unions present at the meeting committed themselves to building the work of the Council, from growing unions to negotiating global and regional agreements with multinationals.



The Liaison Council will play a key role in the preparation of the 2014 UNI Global World Congress, which will be held in Cape Town. This will be the first UNI Global Union World Congress to take place on the African continent and also coincides with the 20^th anniversary of democracy in South Africa.



“UNI Global Union and our South Africa Liaison Council will be working closely together to host a brilliant World Congress,” Jennings said.
