EU telecom package: Negotiations on final compromise continue



The EU Commission, the European Parliament and the Czech EU-Presidency failed to find a final compromise on the EU telecom package after negotiations on Monday.



UNI europa and its members, representing more than 400 000 members in the telecom industry throughout Europe, call again on EU decision-makers to shape a modern telecom regulation that respects the concerns of the industry’s workforce and gives incentives for further investment in universal high-speed internet.



The European Commission has identified investment in broadband as an important economic tool to create around one million new jobs and has set out a goal of developing broadband networks to achieve a full 100% highspeed internet coverage by 2010. Accordingly, the Council has recently adopted a European Economic Recovery plan parts of which are focusing on broadband development, underlining that we need to boost confidence in investment.



As trade unions, we urge the European Parliament and the Council to solve the remaining obstacles for a compromise as soon as possible as it is crucial to finalize the EU telecom package before the EU elections in June. The European Parliament will have to vote on the package in May if the EU is serious about paving the way for more investment and job creation in the ICT sector.
