In May 2008, the acquisition of Tele Atlas by Tom Tom was formalized. Tele Atlas is a digital mapping company. Among the numerous applications it produces, the Car Navigation System is one of the most important. Tom Tom produces satellite navigation systems. Until last year, Tom Tom was a client of Tele Atlas. Then, Tom Tom acquired Tele Atlas to become the owner of those maps which, previously, were bought by Tom Tom to complete his products.



After this commercial operation, a restructuring campaign started. This campaign touched every offices and departments of both companies all over the world.

After reassuring its employees about their professional future, Tele Atlas Italy cut 10 out of its 39 workers. And the restructuring is probably not over. Last week, a negotiation with the union was concluded with a social plan leading to another cut of 36 workers. In Italy, the first wave of redundancies has been communicated directly to those involved without any negotiation between social parties.



The Italian managers did not respond to the workers’ continuous requests of information about their professional future. The Italian managers have blamed the European ones from the main office in Belgium for the decisions regarding the workers’ cuts and have suggested that they acted only as mere intermediaries in this restructuring process.

For this reason, the workers of Tele Atlas ask for support and coordination of all unions in Europe which have members in this company in order to set up discussion with the European management of the company.
