On June 9, 2009, ASPEK Indonesia, which represents 75,000 members in the service sector throughout Indonesia, delivered a letter personally to the US Embassy at Jakarta, calling for the recognition and passing of the important US Employees Free Choice Act.
The Aspek delegation consists of General Secretary of ASPEK, Bro. Rusdi, Chairman of Antara union, Bro. Yusuf and General Secretary of Rabobank Indonesia union, Bro. Antoni, accompanied by Director of UNI Apro Telecoms sector & IBITs, Bro. Kun Wardana.
They were received by the Labour Attache of US Embassy, Mr Stanley Harsha.
During the meeting with Mr Stanley, ASPEK emphasized its fullest commitment as part of the UNI family in supporting the trade unions in US and in enabling American workers to excerise their rights and to have a genuine voice at work through the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. As part of the global labour movement, ASPEK believes that by recognizing the EFCA now, it will bring significant impact to democracy all over the world.
Mr Stanley and ASPEK already have an existing cordial relationship as there had been previous meetings with various ASPEK leaders. His open disposition gave way to a lot of meaningful and fruitful discussions about the political and trade union situation in the US. As an Indonesian labour expert himself, the discussion on US socio-political context also spilled over to relate to issues pertaining to workers’ welfare and issues in Indonesia.
At the end of the one hour dialogue, Mr Stanley had promised to deliver the message to the Ambassador of US Embassy in Indonesia, Mr Cameron R. Hume as well as to his colleagues back in the US.
