Cleaners and Security Workers Demand Justice from Global Banks

Banks like Royal Bank of Scotland, BNP Paribas, Allied Irish Bank, Deutsche Bank, Millennium Bank, Citibank and others received billions of dollars in the bailout process and need to show they are spending this money responsibly.
UNI Global Union represents cleaning and security workers globally, and wants Global Banks to sign an agreement, adopting a Responsible Contractor Policy, to ensure their security and cleaning work is contracted to companies that obey national laws and treat workers with respect.
Actions took place in countries around the world.
Workers in the Netherlands gathered outside the Dutch Bank, which supervises all banks in the country, and demanded responsible contracting.
Workers in Bangalore, India, are seeking an improvement in the minimum wage for security workers. Their appeals to multinational banks and security companies to pay them a living wage had been going unheard until June 15th, when workers held a public rally outlining their calls for justice.
In Poland, workers gathered outside Allied Irish Bank outlets to let the bank and public know they want justice. This action was supported by fellow workers in Ireland, who distributed leaflets outside several Allied Irish Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank outlets. Workers in Malawi gathered outside banks and gave letters and leaflets to bank managers and customers.
SEIU affiliates in numerous cities across the USA, from New York to Chicago, to Los Angeles to Seattle demanded fair treatment for workers from a variety of banks, including the Royal Bank of Scotland, which owns Citizen Bank. More than one hundred labor and community activists rallied at Deutsche Bank headquarters in Boston to call on the company to stop foreclosures, support passage of the Employee Free Choice Act and adopt a responsible contractor policy for all property services workers.
Other countries taking part in International Justice Day included: Australia, Hong Kong, Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Germany, New Zealand and Sweden. In some cases, bank delegations have now led to preliminary Labor-Management discussions about adopting a Responsible Contractor Policy.
