UNI-Apro P& L/SEWU-THP: Global Economic Crisis and Postal Workers
UNI-Apro Post & Logistics/SEWU-THP Joint Seminar was held in Ayutthaya, Thailand, which was participated by international participants and 25 members of the Thailand Postal Union and UNI-TLC colleagues. The theme of the joint seminar was “Global Economic Crisis and Postal Workers”.
Brother Boonsrueng, Vice President of SEWU-THP and Brother Jaran Lemsen, Vice President of UNI-TLC, gave inspiring and motivating opening addresses to the participants.
After the opening, Prof. Lae Dilokvidhyarat, Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkong University gave a lecture on the general history and evolution of the Thailand labor movement. According to him, organizing rate of state enterprises recorded over 60% as compared to 30% in private companies.
Brother Roh Joon-hwan, Coordinator for UNI-Apro Post & Logistics also gave a presentation on “Economic Crisis Impact on UNI affiliates and Postal Business”.
Mr. Somprasong Netsawang, Assistant Vice President of the Business Customer Service Department of Thailand Post, shared with the participants the implementation and application of RFID technology in logistics business.

Participants were also divided into groups to deliberate on their experience of the impact of the current economic crisis on the Post and Logistics Services and to jointly explore how the Post and Logistics Services could potentially tackle the adverse impacts.
Each sub regional groups of South Asia, Southeast Asia, SEWU-THP and UNI-TLC, each made a presentation on the following day. There were common impacts raised by all the groups such as the decline in mail volume with income, cutting back of the workforce and the increase in casual workers employment. Some of participants suggested that unions could pay more attention to these trends and if necessary cooperate with management to introduce new products/ services as well as to increase efficiency in services delivery and to reward staff.
At the closing, Bro. Boonsrueng, Vice President of UNI-TLC expressed deep appreciation to the UNI Japan Post for their sponsorship to the seminar and appealed to the region’s trade unions to work closely together to overcome the current crisis together.
