At the time of Carrefour CEO Lars Olofsson announcing a strategic programme at the beginning of July “for transforming Carrefour” (not mentioning any job cuts), the Italian stores were already in a crisis. Senior management in Italy, having classed 111 outlets as under-performing, is already in the process of shutting down seven of them in the south of the country and two in Rome, with the loss of 546 jobs if no successor is found.



The situation reached boiling point when management took the unilateral decision to no longer adhere to the company’s collective agreement, leading to the Italian unions, Filcams- CGIL, Fisascat-CISL and Uiltucs-UIL, coming out on strike for two days on July 17 and 18.



Pierangelo Raineri, General Secretary of Fisascat-CISL expressed his “great satisfaction” at the industrial action in Turin, Pisa, Casalecchio di Reno and elsewhere. The company has since returned to the negotiating table.
