Sporting event unites postal and DHL workers in Costa Rica



Postal workers and public service employees, workers in DHL and other companies in Costa Rica participated in a morale boosting football match as part of efforts by a union to unify employees.



The match, which took place on 9 May, was the first in the “Postal Cup” series of events, designed to strengthen ties among workers in DHL, the public sector postal service and water, electricity and communications utilities.



Supported by UNI global union, the event was organised by Sindicato Industrial de Trabajadores Eléctricos y de Telecomunicaciones, which represents workers in post, telecommunications and electricity and which is seeking to organise DHL employees. The match provided camaraderie, solidarity and fair competition and helped build unity through a common goal. Ivonne Jackelen UNI Organising coordinator in Costa Rica said, "Organising work can use all kinds of means to achieve a stronger workers camaraderie - our activists on the ground suggested football, and it worked great to unite workers and give them an understanding they had common issues and needs."
