Meeting with SINDEEPRES in Sao Paulo
SINDEEPRES (Sindicato dos Empregados em Empresas de Prestação de Serviços a Terceiros, Colocação e Administração de Mão de Obra, Trabalho Temporário, Leitura de Medidores e Entrega de Avisos do Estado de São Paulo) is a union organising and representing outsourced and temporary workers as well as the staff in Adecco, Manpower and other international and Brazilian temp agencies in the city of Sao Paulo. It was founded in 1992 and now affiliates around two hundred thousand workers.
Giedre Lelyte and Kathy Gonzalez (UNI Americas Women and TAW Co-ordinator) were welcomed by the President Genival Beserra Leite and other union officials. Lelyte gave a short presentation on UNI Global Union and its activities in the temporary agency work sector, stressing the importance of global union alliances and international co-operation. Since the union has good social dialogue with the employers' organisation SINDEPREESTEM (a member of Ciett), she also mentioned the Memorandum of Understanding and joint activities with the International Labour Organisation.
Emphasising the growing number of women both in the temp positions and the unions, Gonzalez introduced the activities of UNI Women and different campaigns it was running.
SINDEEPRES representatives said the temp work industry was growing in Brazil. There are around 500,000 temp workers just in Sao Paulo. The union represents the agency staff and workers posted in the telecommunications, logistics, energy, public administration as well as property services workers (doormen).
The union has just finished the collective negotiations with the employers' organisation and the new agreement will introduce better wages and conditions for the sector workers. The union has its own dental clinic where trade unionists and their family members can get cheap treatment as well as good IT training facilities, legal department and other services for members.
SINDEEPRES expressed the interest of knowing more about UNI Global Union and a possibility to affiliate.
