Canada Post is spending $2.5 billion on new plants, vehicles, equipment and other items to modernize the post office. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is concerned that some of these investments will negatively affect work and working conditions. Since the Canada Post announcement, CUPW has been consulting with Canada Post and studying the large scale postal transformations experienced in other countries. They have also been studying their own past. In 1972 Canada Post announced $1.2 billion in automation and the corporation continued to introduce new technology through the 80s and 90s. At that time the union fought for, and won, large scale technological change protections under Article 29 of their collective agreement. CUPW is using Article 29 to fight just as hard as they have in the past to eliminate the adverse effects of new sequencing machines and increased motorization. They say that only by working together with members strength they will make sure that workers get their fair share of benefits during this round of automation.
