On 7th October NSZZ Solidarnosc National Section of Commerce Employees called for an Italian strike to highlight the worsening working conditions in the Polish commerce sector. Since before the financial crisis, working conditions have been put under increasingly hard pressure and today the sector struggles with low salaries, unsafe jobs, poor management skills among store managers, a shift from permanent jobs to temporary employment and casual workers and added pressure on the system of collective bargaining.





In Poland most of the most important multinational and global retail and wholesale companies operate, and among those are companies that usually pride themselves of good labour relations and have publicly committed themselves to be good employers.



However, it often seems like that the companies forget about it when they enter Poland and therefore UNI Commerce Global Union strongly encourages its social dialogue partners to respect the workers of the Polish commerce sector and help put an end to the rapid increasing trend of "working poor", a trend which we see spreading all over Europe.





The Italian strike that Solidarnosc engaged in, is a peaceful way of showing employers how much the individaul worker actually contributes to the daily running of things at the workplace. Most employers don't realise that in order to make everything work smoothlyworkers need to be flexible as well as showing a great deal of initiative so that the customers feel well-serviced and things get done on time and in the right order. By working according to the letter of the contract gaps and shortcomings usually left unseen or un-noticed come to the surface and the importance of a committed workforce thus becomes obvious to management.
