The Victorian Authorities and Services Branch of the ASU has been working in partnership with the Domestic Violence Clearing House on the development of clauses to insert into collective agreements which deal with issues relating to domestic violence. The Clearing House is a national body that works on research and promotion of materials and information to the domestic violence sector.

 

The Clearing House was awarded a grant from the federal government to work with unions and investigate ways to educate and develop clauses for the workers and workplace agreements.

 

To date there are a number of areas who are working on the further development of these clauses to fit within their working structures but the ASU secured the mentioned clause in an agreement for a local council which includes paid leave in the event of domestic violence situations.

This is a major breakthrough in Australia in recognising the impacts and effects domestic violence has not only on the victim of the heinous crime but also their work colleagues. There are now a number of trades and labour councils and individual unions working on raising awareness of domestic violence in their industries.
