UNI Affiliates formed a network among unions representing Prosegur workers around the world in 2010 and have now begun reaching across borders to meet each other, in person, and to learn first-and about the working conditions of Prosegur security guards in countries outside their own. These trade unionists are committed to seeing that the rights of all employees to form and join trade unions is recognised, that country laws around the world are followed and that pay, benefits and working conditions are as good everywhere as they are in Spain.
In January 2010, the first UNI meeting with Prosegur management was held in Madrid to discuss the mutual benefits for workers and the company in signing a Global Agreement that guarantees that workers’ rights are respected everywhere the company operates. This first meeting was attended by unionists from Spain, France, Portugal and Brazil. Now our delegation is reaching out to unionists in Chile, Uruguay and Brazil to broaden and deepen relationships. Although discussions were encouraging when the parties met last year, UNI was told that the company encountered opposition from country managers in Latin America. Meetings are scheduled with management in Chile and in Brazil to directly discuss these concerns. UNI will meet again with the company in Madrid in March.
While Prosegur is a responsible multinational in many regards, there are problems that need to be resolved. The problems workers face were highlighted in a leaflet that UNI and the unions widely distributed to Prosegur workers on Decent Work Day 2010, which is attached.
Signing a UNI-Prosegur Global Agreement is a first step to ensuring fair treatment and good jobs for security workers across the global.
