Swedish affilate GS held their first ordinary Congress since the formation of the Union in Stockholm on 13, 14, 15 May.
The theme of the Congress was ‘gemensam styrka’ för en solidarisk framtid (Combined Strength for a future in Solidarity)
The Congress was attended by over 140 delegates who decided on the Statutes of the Union going forwards.
In addition to finalizing the Statutes the Congress debated the ongoing challenges facing workers in the various sectors of the union. Reports on the next round of Collective Bargaining which is scheduled to commence in September were given.
Organising and recruitment was also discussed and how the regions need to ensure that workers are recruited into the union.
Addresses to Congress were also made by the President of the LO who spoke about the impact on workers that the financial crisis had and how workers were expected to carry the burden of the failed policies of governments.
The Leader of the Social Democrats also gave a rousing speech and promised that any future Social Democratic government will provide the leadership and the investment in job creation policies. He said that the attacks on the welfare system by the existing government must be opposed.
Per-Olof Sjoo was re-elected President of GS and Tommy Andersson re-elected Vice President, both were unopposed.
There was also a session of Congress on the Palestine situation made by those who have visited that region. GS is active in supporting development programmes for workers in Palestine on training and retraining.
