Canada Post employees and their union, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been trying to resolve the deadlock over proposed drastic reductions in workers benefits. The workers were locked out by the company on June 14 after a series of 12 days of strikes.



The postal workers showing their despair at the way the company wish to take their benefits away were using their right to strike to protest over the cuts. However, Canada's Federal Government has decided to interfere in the collective bargaining process of Canada Post by implementing a back to work legislation to stop the present lock out by making it illegal to strike.



UNI's Head of UNI Post & Logistics, Neil Anderson says that this decision to interfere in the dispute by forcing workers back to work is a move in the wrong direction in regards to labour relations. It is time the government took an active role in ensuring that Canada Post and indeed any employer in Canada engage in meaningful negotiations with the respective unions and not revert to legislation to replace social dialogue.



The CUPW have continued to try to resolve the conflict by giving a proposal designed to break the current deadlock. However, Canadian Post Corporation is maintaining their position for huge cuts in important benefits for staff such as wages, pension and sick leave provisions for new staff.
