UNI Youth Action - Lost Generation - NO WAY !!!
Over 80 young trade unionists from Belgium and France joined in the UNI Europa Youth action outside the European Commission in Brussels yesterday.
We want the European Union, European Commission and all Governments to hear the voices of young workers who are struggling to get a job. We are also in solidarity with the older workers who want to retire at 60 or 65 but are being forced to work longer by the raising of the pension age which only adds to the youth unemployment problems.
The prospects for young workers have never been so bleak.
Free education has been destroyed by governments making it affordable only to the rich and those who find ways to borrow the money end up in debt for a long time after their education has finished.
Young workers, if they are lucky enough to get a job are most likely to get temporary contracts with no long term job security. This also causes problems where they cannot even get loans or purchase their first house.
The young generation say NO MORE!! will do everything we can to fight these European and government policies that affects the prospects for young workers.
The demonstration took place outside the European Commission in Place Schuman at 14.00 and ended with speeches from Colin Medland (UNI Youth, Switzerland), Geert Haverbeke (UNI Youth Area Coordinator, Belgium), Céline Masson (UNI Europa Youth Vice President, France) and Neils Jongerius, Media and Action Coordinator, Socialist Party from the Netherlands. Then it was the Grand Finale….a wheelchair race around the big roundabout outside the Commission.
TV, Radio and Newspapers were covering the demonstration and you can see a video clip of the demo and wheelchair race here.
