The leaders, gathered at the at the UNI Global Union World Executive Board’s annual meeting, welcomed UNI’s work to support organising around the world and build union alliances at some of the world’s biggest multinationals.

“We have a great responsibility in the skills and services sector because this is where nine out of ten jobs will be found in the new global labour market,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings. “We are living through a period of precarious, insecure employment during an age of increasing inequality and unsustainability. Our call to action is to change the rules of the game, to break through, to get things done, to move, to mobilize to organize,” Jennings said. “We are in this for the long term.”



After the success of the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki in 2010, UNI has set its sights on Cape Town and the next World Congress in 2014. The Breaking Through strategy has to be part of the fabric of every action taken by the individual UNI sectors and regions in the next three years.



The World Executive Board also assessed its own goals of increasing gender equality among board members. UNI Women President Denise McGuire gave an update on UNI’s 40 for 40 campaign to ensure that both genders hold at least 40 percent of all seats in all UNI leadership structures and in affiliate’s leadership as well.



The Executive Board welcomed its newest women members who have now increased their ranks to 40 percent of the board.
