UNI Africa Finance executives gathered in their annual meeting From 21-22 November 2011 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Participants exchanged information on Finance activities in the Region and discussed challenges for the sector.

Key priorities for the sector concerned organizing key multinationals such as ECOBANK, BNP, Société Générale des Banques, Barclays and Standard Bank. The main issues raised included union fragmentation , challenges pertaining to low wages, youth unemployment and retirement schemes.

Other important issues concerned temporary agency workers, fair advice and gender issues.

The committee also discussed the future of the Finance sector in Africa and in the world. Steering committee members agreed that communication is key in order to strengthen unions across Africa.

Finally, the committee endorsed the “40 for 40” campaign unanimously and committed to support the campaign across unions in their areas.

The meeting closed on a very positive note with a strong commitment from all steering committee members to enhance communication and support organising in the region.
