UNI Global Union and its affiliates in Africa, Europe and all around the globe are standing together with their Egyptian sisters and brothers. UNI, ITUC and the global union movement say “yes” to organising rights and no to Law 35, which prohibits freedom of association.



UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “Egypt has the opportunity to send out a signal to the rest of the world that labour and union rights are part of the solution and not the problem. Law 35 belongs to the old world order. We have to move forward to create a new social cohesion based on workers’ rights and decent jobs.”



“In the political arena the old regime still has power,” said the Independent Telecom Egypt Workers Union. “The new members of parliament started two days ago and the fight for workers’ rights will increase its intensity. We are seeing massive repression against trade union activists who are leading the fight for organizing rights, collective bargaining and decent wages. We are mobilizing and we will win”.



The UNI MENA plan, which includes strong networking and a focus on union growth in service sectors from Saudi Arabia to the Mediterranean Sea, is in place to make change the anti-worker policies in Egypt and throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
