Under the agreement the organisations expect to work together on remittances, health and safety and training for workers.



“This agreement provides a great opportunity to promote sustainable jobs and quality postal services throughout the Euromed region” said Neil Anderson, UNI Post and Logistics Head of Department.



The agreement will allow workers and postal operators to share experiences and support sustainable development in the region. The widest gap between neighbouring countries in terms of per capita GDP exists between Southern Europe and North Africa.



“This agreement will strengthen workers and their unions in North Africa. It will also include workers’ voices in the development of accessible, efficient and quality postal services,” said Zakari Koudougou, Regional Secretary for UNI Africa.



The Euromed region is significant in terms of international trade and migration. It is the 6^th largest region population-wise with the 3^rd largest GDP, just behind Europe and North America. The revenue generated by the region’s post offices in 2007 was $55 billion and the postal market directly employs 700,000 in the Euromed region.



“It’s time for those 700,000 voices to be a key driver of change and innovation in the Euromed region,” said Oliver Roethig, Regional Secretary of UNI Europa.



The agreement was signed this morning in the Rowland Hill meeting room at the Universal Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland.



Euromed Postal unites the postal operators in Italy, France, Greece, Monaco, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Morocco and Jordan. UNI Global Union represents 2.5 million workers in the postal sector.
