My best wishes to all of you in the celebration of the International Workers Day.



We are living through a conflicting time. The global economic crisis is heavily hitting many of our brothers and sisters, their jobs, their rights and their unions. Sadly, violations of human, labor and union rights are increasing or persisting. But this is also a time when the organization of workers is extending by thou-sands, including in those countries where a grim reality is to be faced, as illus-trated by the emergence of Carrefour Colombia Workers’ Union. In these times, in some countries unions are beginning to play a central role in the political and social agenda, collective bargaining becomes more and more extended, wages and rights are growing. For all these reasons, this is a challenging time. I have no doubt that UNI Americas and its affiliates are called to play a key role, and the Third Regional Conference to be held in Montevideo on December 5, 6 and 7 will be a significant moment of synthesis. A moment when the drums will be beaten for a collective bargaining able to ensure sustainable development in our societies, for strong unions in multinational corporations, and for the growth of unions in all levels and in every country.



Reiterating our commitment to work together and united in the best interest of workers and their organizations, I send to you my best greetings.
