State Bank of Pakistan; Union Leaders Meet UNI Apro Director

Liaquat Ali Sahi, Secretary General of DWF, Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) of the Central Bank of Pakistan,(Financial Industry Regulator) welcomed Jayasri Priyalal to a brief familiarisation meeting with union officials at the State Bank of Pakistan in Karachi. Tanveer Ahamed and Ajab Khan, General Secretary and President of PBIFCEF Pakistan, were also present at the meeting. Sahi shared with Priyalal the Democratic Workers Federation’s concept of partnership; the union works in partnership with the management to serve the general public better by offering various banking services with a nominal fee. In his opening remark, Sahi said that SBP employees are bankers of the state, and are committed to serve the public with a social orientation. The federation has developed a collaborative and cooperative culture with the management to stimulate national development activities in the country. Through regular collective bargaining agreements, the federation has secured better terms and conditions of employment for workers. “UNI Global Union is an innovative and inclusive organization that works globally to increase trade union density in the finance industry,” said Priyalal, introducing the global union federation. Priyalal solicited the Democratic Workers Federations’ support in organising the large numbers of private banks mushrooming in Pakistan. He hopes to unionise employees so that they may secure decent work in their respective banks, and across the industry in Pakistan. Liaquat Sahi and principal officials at the federation expressed interest to join UNI Global Union and will support UNI activities in Pakistan. They hope to learn new experiences about global trade unions as finance industries across the globe feel the pressure amidst the global financial crisis. |
