The Swedish-Finnish telecom company TeliaSonera announced last week that it will slash 2,000 jobs of its total 28,000 at an attempt to save costs. Jobs will be cut in several countries, but CEO Lars Nyberg said that it’s too early to specify which operations will be affected. He alluded that Swedish jobs are at risk since the company has most employees in Sweden, around 9,000.



The announcement was met with dismay by the Swedish trade unions. Agneta Ahlström, president of the telecom group at UNI’s affiliate Unionen, said to the newspaper Dagens Nyheter that there is not room to cut 2,000 jobs in the company. Magnus Brattström, president of the telecom group at UNI’s affiliate SEKO, agreed that it is not possible to remove 2,000 people while maintaining the current level of service. He added that the unions did not receive any advance information about the job cuts from the company.



TeliaSonera has also refused to sign a Global Framework Agreement with UNI.
