The Spanish trade unions called a general strike on November 14th with great success. Millions of workers took part in the action, bringing Spain to a halt and giving a clear demonstration of the depth of anger and opposition amongst Spanish workers. Fernando Lezcarno Communications Secretary of the CCOO announced that November 14th had been an even bigger success than previous strikes in March, saying that more workers from small businesses in particular had now joined the protests. `These protests represent the people demanding a change in the policies of both the EU and the Government` Lezcarno declared. He also commented on the tremendous success of general strikes in Portugal, Italy and Greece.

The General Secretary of CCOO Fernando Toxo declared in Madrid to the hundreds of thousands protesting in the city, `you are the millions in our country who do not give in, but who rebel and reject the suicidal policies that will lead us to ruin`.



Spanish trade unions have been resisting legislative and collective bargaining cutbacks. Employers have been using the financial crisis to reduce wages, social benefits and to increase workloads. Unions throughout Spain have led worker protests to avoid this crisis being laid on the backs of workers.
