Members of the UGTT were attacked this week during a march marking the 60^th anniversary of the assassination of the union’s founder, Farhat Hached. UGTT and its supporters were ambushed by militia of the Ennahda Islamist Party – the majority party in the ruling coalition. The militia attacked with stones, knives and tear gas. Twenty members of the UGTT were seriously injured including two members of the Executive, Hfaiedh Hfaiedh and Samir Cheffi.



Philip Jennings, UNI Global Union General Secretary said, “This is the latest in a series of attacks on the UGTT. UNI condemns the action of the militia in the strongest terms. We are fully supportive of UGTT’s decision to take immediate strike action. The fact that the UGTT members were attacked while remembering the death of their founder shows that this was a cynical and wholly unprovoked attack."
