Video highlights importance of independent voice for World Athletes

Representatives of more than 100 player unions gathered for the 2nd World Athletes Summit from 15-17 2012 at the UNI offices to exchange best practice and assert their status as key stakeholders in world sport. Participation expanded this year to include several of the major U.S. player unions from the NFL (American Football), NBA (Basketball) and NHL (Ice Hockey).

The main priorities emerging from meeting were the reform of anti-doping rules, addressing integrity and corruption issues in world sport, and organizing new athlete associations around the world.



Walter Palmer, responsible for sport at UNI Global Union said, “We have made major steps forward in the past year. We are continuing our engagement with the World Anti Doping Agency. We will intensify our engagement with the IOC and international federations through the establishment of global alliances in key Olympic sports. Our initial meeting with ILO Director General, Guy Ryder, opens the door to further discussions at the international level on the status of athletes as workers. We are grateful that Adam Pengilly, new vice-chairman of the IOC Athletes Commission, made the trip to Nyon. We had a very fruitful and interesting exchange and look forward to working more with the IOC Athletes Commission in the future.”
