Security work in Africa employs approximately 1 million workers and continues to grow. Characterized by low pay, long hours, dangerous conditions, violence, corruption and job insecurity the industry is also an area of low trade union activity.

This week however the Union that represents Security Workers in Namibia NATAU has launched teams of Security Workers working alongside Organizers to sign up workers for the start of a campaign to win union recognition.

In the first day 137 workers signed up.

Common complaints are deductions for purchase of uniforms, low wages, a lack of respect from managers and workers being fired for joining unions.

All week the Organizers and activists will be visiting all manner of workplaces including mines in Namibia.
