Moreover, the media professionals are subject to various harassments when they express opinions freely. UNI Global Union’s Media Entertainment & Arts sector (UNI MEI) is at the forefront in defending rights of media and entertainment industry professionals. UNI MEI defends rights at work, freedom of expression and human rights of the media professionals. Priyalal suggested that it is never too early to start networking at the training school itself before venturing as freelance media professionals.

Susantha Yapa President of Media Professionals & Technologist Media Pro Tech Sri Lanka, shared his experiences in participating in UNI Apro Activities and how he gained confidence to represent the interest of media sector professionals in Sri Lanka. He expressed that protecting intellectual property rights and getting a fair contract with the media group is a real challenge for the students once they complete the Higher National Diploma in TV and Cinema and enter the market as novice freelancers.

UNI Global Union’s memorandum of understanding signed with the Asia Broadcasting Union (ABU), as well as the global framework agreement signed with TV3 Malaysia and Antara Indonesia were distributed to participants.

Media Pro Tech Sri Lanka will be organizing a focus group meeting for media professionals to increase awareness about rights at workplace and the freedom of expression for media professionals with the strength and support of global unions.
