In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared July 18 to be Mandela Day. The aim was to inspire people to work to change the world for the better, and so to build a global movement for good.



In a speech in London on his ninetieth birthday, Mandela said, "Let us remind ourselves that our work is far from complete. Where there is poverty and sickness, including AIDS, where human beings are being oppressed, there is more work to be done.



"After nearly ninety years of life it is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now."



Nelson Mandela is spending his fifth week in hospital. UNI Africa and the rest of the UNI Global Union family joins the world in wishing him well.
