UNI and the Paraguay Trade Union SITEPROPASA is organizing protests all this week over the disgraceful behaviour of Prosegur the multi national Spanish Security Company.



This time last year they engaged in a horrible process of intimidation of workers trying to organize their union and raise issues about pay and working conditions. After 9 months of failed negotiations the workers took strike action. The intervention of the Minister of Labour brought an end to the strike on the promise of further negotiations through arbitration.



Unbelievably, instead of taking part in talks the company fired all 327 strikers. The Government in the mean time had suffered a right wing organized coup that took away the left wing government that had offered to arbitrate.



The workers were faced with letters of dismissal and lawyers threatening them if they did not sign.



Ever since then Prosegur in Spain has refused to take responsibility for the actions of its Paraguay operation. Instead they are in Brazil trying to win contracts for the World Cup and the Olympics.



UNI is calling on Prosegur to start talks now to resolve the problems in Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil, Chile and elsewhere by sitting down to agree a common set of standards of behaviour. If its good enough for G4S, Securitas and ISS to do that then it is good enough for Prosegur.
