Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe said that The Bahamas Parliament will analyze a bill aimed at changing current online gambling regulations.



If it is passed, casinos will be able to offer their clients online gambling activities, as long as they are not Bahamian citizens.  According to Wilchcombe, the amended law will allow non-Bahamian permanent residents and work permit holders to have access to online gambling.  Minister Wilchcombe said that although Bahamians may be granted licenses to operate casinos; gambling is currently illegal for Bahamian citizens. He said that any attempt to lift that ban deserves careful consideration. He also added that the Government had no plans to lift it.



In a referendum held in January 2013, Bahamians voted against national lottery and online gambling legalization.  According to official figures, twenty seven thousand people out of the three hundred forty eight thousand people who live in the islands voted for gambling legalization, and forty one thousand, against.
