Rio de Janeiro, 23rd August, 2013. FIFA called a meeting where UNI was present along with the private security sector unions of host cities of the FIFA Confederations Cup, also present were representatives of companies that will participate in the event, and representatives of the Cup’s Local Organising Committee.



José Boaventura, president of The National Confederation of Security Guards (CNTV) and member of the Steering Committee of UNI Property Services, attended the meeting where FIFA rated the performance of private security in the Confederations Cup as a success. According to event organisers, in most places there was a feeling of safety within the stadiums which was greater than that felt in the surrounding areas, due to the demonstrations that were taking place at the time.



In spite of the organising committee’s positive assessment, the workers' representatives strongly pointed out the serious labour and working condition violations that occurred; such as low pay, delays in salary payments, and the low quality of the food provided. Also negative is the fact that one these companies declared having only 15 permanent workers, but for the event it was estimated around 3000 informal workers hired.



In the context of ensuring that multinational and domestic security companies respect the rights of workers and unions, Boaventura stated that "contractors must take care to respect the principles of good working conditions. The image of sporting events cannot be ruined by companies that do not respect security workers and their dignity".
