UNI-affiliated trade unions representing TeliaSonera employees in Europe and Asia gathered last week for a first Global Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. The present trade union leaders and activists expressed their solidarity and commitment to working together at the international level by forming a UNI TeliaSonera Global Union Alliance. The unions in the Alliance will work to ensure that the rights of employees are guaranteed throughout the TeliaSonera group, that trade unions are respected as social partners, and that unnecessary redundancies are avoided.



The meeting was a result of both an international project to organize workers in the TeliaSonera group in Central Asia, Asia, and Eastern Europe, and a network of Nordic unions in TeliaSonera working together to share information and experiences in order to fight the layoffs that the company announced in October last year and that mostly affect the Nordic countries.



Head of UNI ICTS Alan Tate said “This is a great step forward for TeliaSonera employees. For the first time, trade unionists from across the TeliaSonera group have come together to share experiences and develop common strategies.”

Since the merger of the national telecom operators Telia and Sonera in 2002, TeliaSonera has expanded to almost 20 countries and currently employs approximately 27,000 employees in Europe and Asia.
