Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, hosted the meeting of the Central Committee of All India Bank of Baroda Employees’ Federation (AIBOBEF).

With a participation of 125 delegates from different parts of India, the meeting revolved around issues like the welfare of the employees, strategies for the future, vacancies in the Central Committee, and the contribution of the union towards the bank’s growth.

Most importantly, the General Secretary of AIBOBEF, Mr. Milind Nadkarni, in accordance with the commitments stated in the UNI World Congress in Nagasaki “Breaking Through” and the UNI Equal Opportunities campaign, 40for40, which sets out a target of 40% women representation in leadership positions by 2014, insisted that in order to achieve a much needed gender balance within the union, all the 28 units should have a woman representative in the Central Committee. Furthermore, he requested the formation of a committee to tackle gender issues and to encourage other women to come forward and occupy positions within the union structure.

For Mr. Nadkarni, it is key to involve both women and young people in union structures in order to build a stronger union.
