On 28 August, 50 employees of L.M. Ericsson in Bangladesh embarked on a hunger strike after negotiations with management broke down over the terms and conditions of the employees’ severance packages. Two strikers have already fallen ill, and the situation is likely to worsen.

The recent layoffs are part of management’s efforts to downsize the company, and follow the casualization of many permanent contracts in Ericsson Bangladesh.
 
Earlier this year, Ericsson Bangladesh employees decided to form a trade union to protect their interests, and filed for registration with the authorities on May 16. The application was denied by the authorities, who are intent on keeping unions out of the Bangladeshi ICTS sector. 

UNI ICTS stand in full solidarity with the strikers and all employees of Ericsson Bangladesh, and calls on the company to recognize and engage in negotiations with the union to urgently find a solution to this critical situation.
