Over 40,000 CWA union members at US telecoms company AT&T are walking off the job for three days from this Friday 19th of May.

The dispute is over the mass outsourcing of AT&T jobs to low-wage contractors, slashing the pay and benefits of workers.

The strikers include 21,000 AT&T Mobility workers who are employed in the retail network and contact centres of the company’s mobile division across the US. Union members are concerned about contact centre job security, with AT&T cutting 11,000 jobs in the US since 2011 with an extensive offshoring programme.

Other AT&T workers outside of the Mobility division are also concerned by low-wage outsourcing. The strike by the AT&T mobile staff will be joined by landline workers in California, Nevada and Connecticut. Workers for DirecTV, the pay-TV operator owned by AT&T, will also join the industrial action on the west coast of the country.

AT&T is the largest telecoms company in the United States and makes nearly US$ 1 billion every month in profits.

CWA is the union for workers in the telecommunications industry in the United States and represents employees of AT&T. CWA is an affiliate of UNI Global Union, the international union federation for the telecommunications industry.
