TiSA – the Trade in Services Agreement is the world’s most secretly negotiated trade agreement. New leaks, published yesterday by Greenpeace Netherlands once again confirm that TiSA, if signed, will tie the hands of our elected policy makers, disregard the COP21 and damage democracy
UNI General Secretary, Philip Jennings comments: “These new leaks prove that the negotiating governments know no limits and in secret are selling out on democracy and the public good. TiSA will undermine the COP21 agreement by preventing governments from prioritizing clean energy, such as solar and wind, over fossil fuels. This is totally unacceptable. The COP21 agreement to keep temperature rises to 1.5C requires that governments can incentivise the transition to clear energy technologies. This requires investments that would be prohibited if TiSA is signed. I once again call on our affiliates to do all they can to urge their governments to pull out of the negotiations.”
The 50 TiSA negotiating governments are meeting in Geneva this week for another round of secret negotiations. With the aim of concluding TiSA before the end of the year, the governments are moving swiftly forward. As before, no official stakeholder meetings are held with trade unions, civil society groups or consumers. Yet TiSA will cover more than 70% of the world’s services sectors, affecting 100s of millions of workers and citizens alike.
UNI Global Union is working closely with global trade unions and NGOs to prevent and stop TiSA from ever coming into being.
