UNI Global Union has added its voice condemning the announcement made by US IT giant Hewlett-Packard that it will slash some 10% of its global work force, 25-30,000 jobs, as part of its plans to split the company in two.

HP already announced 55,000 job earlier this year. The UK’s Public Services Union (PCS) has already roundly condemned the proposed job cuts.

PCS industrial officer Peter Olech said: “Alongside our sister unions we will want to engage with the company on the scale and location of these devastating job cuts.

“Although in the short-term the cuts will appease shareholders and probably boost share prices we believe staff are already struggling with work and workloads due to the loss of experienced colleagues and these cuts will make things worse.

“The cuts come at a time when staff have seen senior executives at HP receiving multimillion dollar pay awards and bonuses, including recent disclosures reporting some HP senior executives being awarded salaries of $1.5 million, and cash bonuses and stock options worth in excess of $10 million.” 

UNI Global Union Head of ICTS, Alan Tate, has strongly endorsed Peter Olech’s statement and the position being taken by PCS and other unions.

This week’s announcement comes only months after HP announced it was cutting 55,000 jobs.
