Today millions of workers across the world are out on the streets to celebrate the dignity of labour and protest at the rise of inequality. International Worker’s Day has its roots in a strike for the 8 hour working day in Chicago, 1866 in which several protestors were killed. More than a 150 years later, workers are still having to fight for their basic human rights at work and the struggle goes on.

The UNI family is out in force today taking part in celebrations all over the world and you can follow them on social media.

UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “We salute all our affiliates and their members who continue to “Breaking Through” for decent work to create a world where the concept of “Including You”, inclusive growth, replaces the immoral levels of inequality we face today. The dignity of labour is not a concept it is a human right that all men and women recognise and aspire to.”
