The General Secretary of COSATU Zwelinzima Vavi received a stirring reception from the over 2000 delegates at the UNI World Congress in Cape Town.

Vavi came with a strong message, he said,  “Behavior where union leaders act like bosses and believe that because they are elected they can make decisions without reference to the base must become a thing of the past.”

He continued, “Unions must remember to fight corruption in their own unions, but also more widely against the cancer of corruption more generally.”

“Democratic centralism is only revolutionary is only revolutionary if it is truly democratic and principled.”

“Many of the divisions that we see in our society are in fact about pushing one another from the feeding trough, and have little to do with political or ideological differences.”

“This is a tragic state of affairs that requires a decisive and forceful trade union movement that stands squarely against corruption.”
