UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings, has described the Prosegur’s internal investigation into extensive allegations of human rights violations at its operations in Colombia and Peru as little more than a sham. Jennings said he would inform the UNI World Congress in Cape Town next month that Prosegur’s behavior was “window dressing of the worst kind.”

Prosegur recently sent its Global Human Resources Director to Latin America to allegedly find the truth regarding threats and violence against union activists and leaders.

Jennings said, “This is clearly a sham of an investigation."  The Prosegur investigation team included managers who have themselves been implicated in the threats and abuses of workers.  The company refused to allow UNI to participate even though our involvement had been requested by unions throughout Latin America and in Spain. UNI was excluded simply because we have been public in our demand that Prosegur clean up its operation in Colombia and Peru. We stand by these allegations and call again for Prosegur to do the right thing.

“I attended the G20 Summit in Brisbane last week and there was a meeting of minds on workplace safety and the Prosegur case flies in the face as to what global leaders are trying to do. All workers deserve workplaces that are “free from fear” of structural hazards and also threatening and violent behavior.”

UNI calls on Prosegur to carry out a bonafide investigation of the extensive allegations of threats and violence against union activists and leaders in Colombia and Peru.  Workers and their families are at risk.  These are serious matters that demand serious responses by a company that likes to promote itself as a leading exponent of corporate social responsibility.
